Life lines – Mural drawings connecting 79 hospital rooms in Miami

Gabriel Delponte

For almost two months, I created a series of murals spread across 79 rooms of a hospital in Miami. After completing three or four of these drawings I was very tired of refilling my pens... and then I saw all these patients with IV drips (An IV fluid drip involves a small tube called a catheter and a saline-based electrolyte solution that contains your selected vitamins and nutrients. An IV drip delivers these essential nutrients and fluids directly into your bloodstream, bypassing your digestive tract. There’s no wait time, and the nutrition is instantly available to remedy your body’s health and wellness needs).

I thought "I can use this technique as a drawing tool". An idea was born and I finished the next murals using my own invention... An ink IV drip... using gravity to pump ink to a modified pen to draw endless lines.

I created stories for patients of all age groups. Stories for them to discover when they wake up after surgery or during a long recovery process. Stories to take along on their journeys when they leave these rooms. I created life lines that connected all rooms and gave each patient a glimpse of hope no matter what phase of their journey they were in.
