For this Toy Project, we hosted a food-sharing evening together with Café Yucca in Zürich.

Zürich often appears clean, calm and well managed. Homelessness is rarely visible in public space - not because it doesn’t exist, but because it is largely absorbed into temporary housing, support systems and institutional structures. Need is present, but it tends to remain in the background.

Café Yucca is open to everyone and serves many purposes at once. It is a place to arrive and recharge, but also a meeting point where guests connect, talk and spend time together. In the evenings, a free dinner is served, and there is always a large pot of soup on the stove for everyone.

Beyond meals, Café Yucca also offers low-threshold, unbureaucratic support - practical help in everyday matters, access to computers and basic infrastructure that many take for granted. Small things that make a real difference.

The evening offered a chance to look beyond Zürich’s polished surface and acknowledge the importance of places that provide stability, dignity and community - every single day.
